Dual Screens For Your Laptop
Posted on Nov 12, 2010
I had heard about the power of having a dual screen setup for a while now. Things like more room to work, better productivity, and not to mention the “cool” factor. I never thought much about it until recently I saw how easy and inexpensive it is.
You’re going to need just a laptop and a spare screen. I picked up an Acer 15.6″ flat screen monitor to match the size of my laptop. At around $100, that’s the only expense for this project.
Here’s a basic run down on the steps.
Make sure you have a VGA outlet on your laptop. It looks like this…
Plug the power cable from the monitor to an outlet, and then plug the VGA connector from the monitor to your laptop.
Power up the monitor and the laptop.
Right click on the desktop and select “properties”, then “settings” and find where the display settings are (the process is slightly different amongst the different Windows operating systems). Then adjust the main display to screen 1 and make screen 2 the extended display.

Hey Phil,
I always wondered how to do this and was too embarrassed to ask anyone and never got around to doing a google search so thanks for this!
I have a laptop and miss having the space a normal monitor gave me so will give it a try soon.
By the way I love your newsletter!

Hi Rhonda,
I felt the same way, thinking it would be complicated or too expensive. But it wasn’t, and it feels so much more freeing to drag stuff over to the other screen.
